Building an effect pedal, can I hurt my amplifier?

so for cl I am building a guitar effect pedal, overdrive, and well I would like to know if it would hurt my speaker. the worst I could see happening is that the nine volt battery would shoot straight into the speaker/amplifier I use for my guitar. I'm not sure how bad that would be tough.
